A bicycle is a human-powered vehicle able to transport people by pedaling to move a chain connected to the rear wheel. Attached to the frame are handlebars for people to grab onto and steer the front wheel to be able to change directions. Alongside the handlebars is a seat. All bicycles come with different purposes: road bicycles are for smooth rides on the pavement because of their thin tires, touring bicycles are meant for longer ride time and carrying more objects, mountain bicycles are for off-road riding and going on trails, and cruisers are designed for casual bicycle riders aiming for comfort. Often referred to as a cycle or bike, bicycles are allowed by state law to be ridden on the roadway or specific off-road trails.

Fixed-Gear Bicycle | Fixie
Size comparison drawing of the Fixed-Gear Bicycle (Fixie) compared to an average person

A fixed gear bicycle, or a fixie, is a bike with its cog tied directly to its back wheel with its chain. The fixed gear bicycle cannot change gears, which can make it more difficult to ride uphill. The back wheel cannot move independently of the pedals. So, when going downhill, the pedals will continue to spin, requiring the rider to be careful to not take a pedal to the shin or lose control.

Fixed-Gear Bicycles have a total length between 66”-67.375” (167.6-171.1 cm), width of 20” (50.8 cm), and height in the range of 38”-41.5” (96.5-105.4 cm). Fixed-Gear Bicycles weigh roughly 26 lb (11.8 kg).
