Mammals | Mammalia

Description
Description

Mammals (Mammalia) are a diverse class of warm-blooded vertebrates characterized by the presence of mammary glands, which females use to nurse their young. They also typically have hair or fur, a neocortex (a region of the brain), and three middle ear bones. Mammals inhabit a vast range of environments, from the ocean depths to the highest mountains, adapting to diverse ecosystems across the globe. They evolved around 200 million years ago, with current species ranging from the tiny bumblebee bat to the colossal blue whale. Mammals play crucial roles in ecosystems, including as predators, herbivores, and pollinators, and many have complex social structures.

Anatomy
Anatomy

Mammals are a varied group sharing key features like warm-bloodedness, fur or hair, and mammary glands for nursing their young. They have a well-developed brain, facilitating complex behaviors and enhanced senses such as sight, hearing, and smell. Mammals are typically four-limbed, with movements adapted to their environment, from running and swimming to flying in the case of bats. Many can vocalize, aiding in communication and social interactions. Their skeleton provides a sturdy framework, with a spinal column divided into distinct regions for flexibility and support. Mammals breathe using lungs, and their circulatory system is highly efficient, featuring a four-chambered heart.

Human Interaction
Human Interaction

Humans' relationship with mammals is complex and multifaceted, spanning companionship, agriculture, scientific research, and conservation. Domesticated species like dogs and cats are beloved pets, featuring widely in pop culture, from Lassie to Garfield. Farm animals like cows and pigs are vital for food and materials. Wildlife fascinates and inspires, populating nature documentaries and films like "The Lion King."

Conservation efforts are critical, as many mammals face extinction due to habitat loss, climate change, and poaching. Organizations worldwide work to protect them, promoting biodiversity and ecological balance. Mammals are integral to human life, culturally, economically, and environmentally.

Common Questions
Common Questions
When did mammals first appear?

Mammals first appeared during the Triassic period which was about 252 million to 201 million years ago and were members of the reptilian order Therapsida. This order had a subclass, Synapsida which are sometimes referred to as mammal-like reptiles. They were part of the Carboniferous period and are considered one of the earliest reptilian groups.

Which mammal species lay eggs?

The only 2 mammal species that lay eggs are the duck-billed platypus and the echidna, also known as the spiny anteater. The reasons these 2 mammals still lay eggs may be due to their distant ancestors as well as other primitive traits like their reptile-like shoulders.

What are the most common mammal species?

The most common mammal species are humans as it is the most numerous species of mammal on Earth. As of 2022, the human population reached 7.9 billion. Human beings are the only species that are close to exceeding the number of members of the brown rat and the house mouse.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Scaled comparison drawing of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier dog breed compared to the size of an average person

The Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier is a terrier type that originates from Ireland. They were initially bred as a farm dog to herd, watch, and guard livestock, and to hunt and kill vermin. Today they compete in obedience, agility, and tracking, and they can sometimes be utilized in animal-assisted therapy. The breed is known for its soft, silky hair that does not shed, and the coat is a wheaten or ginger color. They have a square, well-built structure, and the breed is known to be energetic and playful.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers have a withers height between 17”-19" (43-48 cm) and a typical weight in the range of 30-40 lb (14-18 kg). The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has an overall body length of roughly 26”-28” (66-71 cm), standing height between 22”-24” (56-61 cm), and a typical lifespan of 12-15 years.

Chinese Crested
Scaled comparison drawing of the Chinese Crested dog breed compared to the size of an average person

The Chinese Crested Dog is a hairless dog breed. They come in two varieties, with and without fur (Powderpuff and Hairless), which are born in the same litter. Superficially, the two varieties seem to be different breeds, as the Hairless has soft, humanlike skin with tufts of fur on its paws. The Powderpuff has a long, soft coat, and when the fur is grown out, the breed resembles a terrier. While they enjoy being outdoors for daily exercise, the Chinese Crested is not a high energy breed, so they are a good option for apartment or city living.

Chinese Cresteds have a withers height between 11”-13” (25-33 cm) and a typical weight in the range of 5-12 lb (2-5 kg). The Chinese Crested has an overall body length of roughly 17”-19” (43-48 cm), standing height between 15”-17” (38-43 cm), and a typical lifespan of 12-15 years.

Chital
Comparison illustration of the size of a Chital to an average human

The Chital (Axis Axis) is a deer species native to the Indian South, also known as the Spotted Deer, and the Axis Deer. In India and Sri Lanka, it lives in herds of up to 100 or more in grasslands and forests. The Chital's coat is brown, reddish overhead, and a white patch underneath and along the side of their bodies.

The male Chital usually has three-tined antlers that branch lengths of up to 39 inches (100 cm). Chital are most active in the morning hours and will rest in the midday heat in shaded areas. Though the grass is most of their diet, Chital will browse the trees during the dry season and even stand at their rear legs to access higher leaves.

Chital have standing shoulder heights between 2’6”-3’3” (75-100 cm), head-to-body lengths in the range of 3’7”-4’7” (110-140 cm), and overall weights of 99-187 lb (45-85 kg). The lifespan of a wild Chital is roughly 10-15 years.
