Swimming Pool Layouts

Swimming pools are structures designed specifically to hold a body of water for people to swim in as an exercise or leisure activity. Constructed as either in-ground pools built into the ground or as freestanding constructions set on top of the ground (above ground pools), swimming pools are commonly created as public pools, children’s pools, competition pools, exercise pools, hotel pools, or as private pools in residential environments. Swimming pools are designed with a large range of shapes, sizes, and depths and are typically built from concrete, fiberglass, plastic, metal, or stone.

What should you consider when choosing a pool layout?

When choosing a pool layout, the first aspect to consider is size. There is a limited amount of say one has when it comes to pool size as the extent of the yard is what determines the pool’s maximum. In addition, there are building codes and safety regulations to abide by. Pool depth is a second factor to consider, especially for a family with small children. The pool can also come in a variety of shapes. Older pools most likely are rectangular in shape and can be ideal for exercising. Irregular or round shaped pools are considered to be a more relaxing shape suited for family gatherings. Placement, privacy, visibility from inside the home are also factors to consider as a pool can become a huge part of one’s everyday living.

How do you design the area around a pool?

The area around the pool can be designed with wood or stone decking, with either natural or synthetic wood or natural or tiled stone depending on the preferred style and maintenance. Stones can also be used to create a low border wall around the entire pool. Umbrellas, shade sails, and various garden furniture can be added for shade and relaxation. Landscaping is also a huge part of the design of the area around the pool. For example, increased surrounding greenery can allow for intimacy and privacy. Finally, lights can be placed to increase safety and create an ambience.

What is coping in pool design?

Coping refers to the stone or concrete material that makes a lip at the edge of a pool. It is the coping that one hangs onto when in the water and provides a non-slip surface for walking. This cap finishes the overall look of the pool while protecting the wall from harsh weather conditions.

A Circular or Round Swimming Pool is what its name suggests—it is circular. It can be above ground or fitted into the ground. However, its bottom isn’t round but flat, ideal for both kids and adults. The advantage of a round swimming pool is it promotes optimal water flow and efficient filtration. However, it is not space-efficient.

Octagon Swimming Pools
Aerial illustration of a man floating on a raft in an Octagon Swimming Pool

As the name suggests, an Octagon Swimming Pool has eight sides. While the cut-off on the edges takes off some pool space, the architectural design gives off a statement. Besides, you can use the spaces left by the cut-off to put your pool accessories like umbrellas and patio tables or as an excellent spot for relaxing after a swim.

Lap Swimming Pools
Plan drawing of two people swimming in a Lap Swimming Pool

Every Lap Swimming Pool is rectangular-shaped and is mainly used for fitness and health purposes. As a result of their elongated nature, they are good for narrow lots or backgrounds or tight spaces. This long narrow nature has made it popular in urban design and a focal point in the yard.
