Swimming Pool Layouts

Swimming pools are structures designed specifically to hold a body of water for people to swim in as an exercise or leisure activity. Constructed as either in-ground pools built into the ground or as freestanding constructions set on top of the ground (above ground pools), swimming pools are commonly created as public pools, children’s pools, competition pools, exercise pools, hotel pools, or as private pools in residential environments. Swimming pools are designed with a large range of shapes, sizes, and depths and are typically built from concrete, fiberglass, plastic, metal, or stone.

What should you consider when choosing a pool layout?

When choosing a pool layout, the first aspect to consider is size. There is a limited amount of say one has when it comes to pool size as the extent of the yard is what determines the pool’s maximum. In addition, there are building codes and safety regulations to abide by. Pool depth is a second factor to consider, especially for a family with small children. The pool can also come in a variety of shapes. Older pools most likely are rectangular in shape and can be ideal for exercising. Irregular or round shaped pools are considered to be a more relaxing shape suited for family gatherings. Placement, privacy, visibility from inside the home are also factors to consider as a pool can become a huge part of one’s everyday living.

How do you design the area around a pool?

The area around the pool can be designed with wood or stone decking, with either natural or synthetic wood or natural or tiled stone depending on the preferred style and maintenance. Stones can also be used to create a low border wall around the entire pool. Umbrellas, shade sails, and various garden furniture can be added for shade and relaxation. Landscaping is also a huge part of the design of the area around the pool. For example, increased surrounding greenery can allow for intimacy and privacy. Finally, lights can be placed to increase safety and create an ambience.

What is coping in pool design?

Coping refers to the stone or concrete material that makes a lip at the edge of a pool. It is the coping that one hangs onto when in the water and provides a non-slip surface for walking. This cap finishes the overall look of the pool while protecting the wall from harsh weather conditions.

Lazy L Swimming Pools
Plan drawing of a Lazy L Swimming Pool with a man floating on a raft for scale

The Lazy L Swimming Pool has more organic shapes, less defined angles, and curved lines. Families love it because of the clear separation of the deep end and shallow end. The shallow end has more slanting edges/curves, making it easier to hide pool steps.

T-Shaped Swimming Pools
Plan drawing of a T-Shaped Swimming Pool with a person floating on a raft for scale

The T-Shaped Swimming Pool comes in different forms, lengths, and dimensions. Two of its grand advantages are that you can separate the shallow and deep ends. While the narrow section leaves off a lot of space, you can use it to put your patio table and umbrellas. Pool steps can also be positioned on any side of the pool.

Oval Swimming Pools
Plan view drawing of a woman floating on a raft in an Oval Swimming Pool

The advantage of an Oval Swimming Pool is that it provides a large swimming area for exercise and play. However, this may mean that it takes a lot of space. An Oval Swimming Pool is ideal for longer yards and not wider yards. You can also install it above the ground or into the ground and even use it for swimming exercises.

Keyhole Swimming Pools
Plan drawing of a Keyhole Swimming Pool with a man floating on a raft for scale

The Keyhole Swimming Pool gets its name from an eye-catching keyhole shape. This design makes it easy to separate the shallow end from the deep end, which is usually at the curved back. This design easily fits a small backyard, besides distinguishing between the front and back of the pool.
