The Matrix
The Matrix is a 1999 science-fiction film set in a dystopian world of simulated reality, where humans are unknowingly trapped whilst their bodies are being used to generate energy. The main character, Neo, discovers this, and joins a resistance to end this abuse. The directors differentiated between reality and simulated reality in the film through the use of color; the simulated world is tinted green. The Matrix is part of the cyberpunk sub-genre of science-fiction, and an important cult film of the 1990s.
The pill that Neo took in the Matrix was the red pill which signified he joined the rebellion. The red pill represents both an uncertain future and freedom from the control of the simulation. The red pill also would allow Neo to escape into the real world.
The Matrix’s virtual reality was set in the year 1999, but the Resistance in the film assumes and believes the current date of the Real World is really 2199. However, there have been previous cycles of Zions meaning that the actual date is at least 2699 or later.
Many scientists negate the idea that we are living in the Matrix and call it an illusion, but prominent figures like Elon Musk, have come forward and said that we might be living in a simulation. Nick Bostrom from Oxford’s University has also argued about the possibility of a Matrix.
