Description
Description

Baboon Flower (Group) (Babiana plicata) refers to cultivated forms of this striking upright-flowering plant, chosen for their vibrant color variations and ornamental appeal. These selections share the species’ characteristic fan-like arrangement of pleated, sword-shaped leaves and funnel-shaped blooms that appear in shades of violet, purple, pink, or blue, often with contrasting markings in the throat. Native to South Africa’s Cape region, Babiana plicata thrives in sunny, open habitats such as grassy slopes and coastal flats.

The name “baboon flower” comes from the observation that wild baboons have been known to dig up and eat its corms. Grouped cultivars may differ in flower size, color intensity, and blooming time, while maintaining the plant’s upright stature and bold presence. Blooming in late winter to spring in their native range, they attract pollinators such as bees and sunbirds. With their striking form and vivid hues, Baboon Flower group varieties bring a touch of exotic charm to ornamental plantings.
