Description
Description

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) is an upright tropical foliage plant renowned for its dramatic flowers and bold leaves, often likened to an exotic bird in flight. Its striking blooms feature vivid orange sepals and a brilliant blue tongue-like petal, emerging from a boat-shaped green bract with red or purple edging. These long-lasting flowers rise above large, banana-like leaves arranged in elegant fans, creating both structure and spectacle. Native to South Africa, it thrives in subtropical and tropical habitats, often along riverbanks and open grasslands.

Sometimes called crane flower, it has become an iconic ornamental plant worldwide, symbolizing freedom, paradise, and magnificence. Its flowers are specially adapted for pollination by birds, particularly sunbirds in its native range, which perch on the flower and trigger pollen release. With its architectural foliage and striking blooms, Bird of Paradise is celebrated as both a garden centerpiece and a living emblem of the tropics.
