Frida Kahlo is one of the great artists of the early twentieth century. Born in Mexico in 1907, she lived with her artist husband Diego Rivera in Mexico City, and became known for her semi-autobiographical paintings which fused her own lived experiences with a sense of magic. She painted portraits, self-portraits and haunting figurative depictions of pain and passion. She used bright, bold colours in her work and used symbolic references to comment on current political and cultural issues. She is also known for her distinctive personal style; her plaited hair, floral headdress, and traditional Mexican clothes.
