Description
Description

The Kingcup Cactus (Echinocereus triglochidiatus), also known as Claret Cup Cactus or Mojave Mound Cactus, is a low-growing, clumping cactus native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It forms dense, rounded mounds composed of cylindrical stems that are covered with short, spiny ribs. The most striking feature of this cactus is its vivid, scarlet-red to orange-red cup-shaped flowers, which bloom in late spring and attract hummingbirds and pollinators.

These blossoms often appear in abundance, creating a brilliant visual display against the desert landscape. The Kingcup Cactus typically grows in rocky canyons, sandy slopes, and high desert plateaus, adapting to both desert and mountainous environments. It is known for its cold hardiness relative to other cacti, thriving at elevations where snow is common. Its compact, sculptural form and vibrant blooms make it a favorite in xeriscaping and native plant gardens.

Cacti (family Cactaceae) are a diverse group of succulent plants known for their distinctive adaptations to arid environments. Characterized by thick, fleshy stems that store water, they often have spines instead of leaves, minimizing water loss and protecting them from herbivores.
