Description
Description

Leather Bergenia (Bergenia crassifolia) is a broad-leaved perennial admired for its bold, structural foliage and seasonal bursts of color. Its thick, leathery leaves form low, spreading clumps that remain striking even in cooler months, shifting in tone from deep green to bronze or reddish hues. This durable quality earned it the common name Leather Bergenia, while it is also referred to as Siberian Tea or Elephant’s Ears, the latter a nod to its wide, rounded leaves.

Native to the rocky slopes and woodland edges of Siberia, Mongolia, and northern China, it thrives in cool, mountainous regions and has been valued for both its resilience and visual impact. The plant carries cultural significance as its dried leaves have historically been brewed into tea in parts of Asia. Combining ornamental foliage with practical tradition, Leather Bergenia stands out as both a decorative and historically meaningful species in gardens and landscapes.
