Maman is a large sculpture that embraces the form of a large spider. Maman was created by Louise Bourgeois in 1999 and was commissioned by The Unilever Series. The sculpture depicts the spider with tall legs and a sac with 32 eggs. Maman was created as a reference to the artist’s mother representing her strength, nurture, and protection. The sculpture is an ode to her mother symbolized through the form of a spider. The Maman sculpture is made from steel, marble, and bronze. The Maman was displayed in various parts of the world including Qatar, Spain, the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
