Maya Angelou was an American author and poet known for becoming a prominent figure in the civil rights movement. Maya Angelou’s most well-known works include I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and On the Pulse of Morning. Throughout her lifetime she published 7 autobiographies, 3 books of essays, poetry books, and plays that spanned over 50 years of work. Throughout her work, Maya Angelou challenged the traditional writing structure of an autobiography, centering her work around racism and identity. Maya Angelou received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. Maya Angelou died on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86.
