His breakthrough role was the lead in the post-apocalyptic Mad Max in 1979 which launched his Hollywood career. He went on to star in the Lethal Weapon series playing LAPD detective Martin Riggs. He moved on to directing and in 1995 directed, produced and starred in Scottish war film Braveheart, which was a box office success. His 2004 film The Passion Of The Christ about the life of Jesus Christ was met with conflicting reviews. He has a total of nine children.
