Meriadoc Brandybuck is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. More commonly known as Merry, he is a hobbit from the Shire who is part of the Fellowship of the Ring, the group formed to assist Frodo Baggins in his quest to return the One Ring to Mordor. Merry and his cousin Pippin are lively and mischievous characters, and fiercely brave and loyal friends. Merry is considered one of the most intelligent of the hobbits, and after Sauron is defeated, he returns to the Shire and becomes the Master of Buckland, a leading hobbit official.
