Description
Description

Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus) is a low-growing, grass-like ornamental plant known for its dense tufts of arching, dark green, strap-shaped leaves that form soft, mounded clumps. Though often referred to as a grass, it is technically a member of the Asparagaceae family and functions as an evergreen groundcover or edging shrub in landscape design.

Native to Japan, China, and Southeast Asia, Mondo Grass naturally inhabits forest floors and shaded slopes. It spreads slowly by underground stolons, creating a lush, carpet-like effect that’s ideal for borders, pathways, and underplanting around trees or shrubs. In summer, it produces small, bell-shaped lavender to white flowers tucked among the foliage, followed by blue-black berries.

Also known as Dwarf Lilyturf, Ophiopogon japonicus is valued for its texture, shade tolerance, and versatility. Its fine, tidy appearance makes it suitable for both formal and naturalistic garden styles, especially in Asian-inspired or woodland-themed landscapes.
