Description

Reed Canary Grass (Phalaris arundinacea) is a tall, perennial pastoral grass belonging to the Poaceae family, known for its robust growth and adaptability to wet environments. Sometimes referred to simply as Canary Grass, it is native to temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, though it has also become invasive in some areas. It typically grows in wetlands, along streambanks, ditches, floodplains, and moist pastures.

This species is characterized by its broad leaves, erect stems, and dense panicles of flower heads that can reach over two meters tall. Its aggressive growth and ability to form thick, monospecific stands make it both valuable for erosion control and forage production, and problematic when it displaces native wetland vegetation.

Reed Canary Grass is highly tolerant of flooding, nutrient-rich soils, and fluctuating water levels. It is used in pasture systems and for soil stabilization, while also providing cover for wildlife in certain managed landscapes.
