Description
Description

Senegal Tea Plant, scientifically named Gymnocoronis spilanthoides, is a tall, emergent aquatic species characterized by its thick stems, opposite serrated leaves, and clusters of white, pom-pom-like flowers. Native to South America, it inhabits marshy banks, slow rivers, and shallow wetlands. Gymnocoronis spilanthoides grows rapidly and spreads through both vegetative fragments and robust underground rhizomes.

A key trait is its ability to form dense stands that rise well above the water surface, shading native species and altering hydrological patterns. The plant’s buoyant stems allow it to float during flooding, helping it colonize new areas. Gymnocoronis spilanthoides is considered invasive in several regions, where it forms thick monocultures that affect biodiversity and water movement. Its height, stability, and distinctive flower clusters make it a visually prominent wetland species.
