Description
Description

Slough Grass (Beckmannia syzigachne), also known as American Slough Grass or Prairie Wild Millet, is a cool-season annual or short-lived perennial grass native to North America and parts of Eurasia. Belonging to the Poaceae family, it is commonly found in wetland habitats such as marshes, sloughs, wet meadows, and the shallow margins of ponds and streams. It thrives in seasonally flooded or consistently moist environments, making it a valuable component of wetland ecosystems.

Characterized by its upright, slender stems and distinctive one-sided seed heads, Slough Grass grows in dense tufts and spreads primarily by seed. It plays an important role in pastoral and conservation landscapes, offering high-quality forage for grazing animals and habitat for wetland wildlife.

Its adaptability to fluctuating water levels and tolerance for saturated soils make it especially useful in restoration projects. Additionally, Beckmannia syzigachne contributes to erosion control and nutrient cycling in riparian and lowland grassland systems.
