Sofia Coppola is an American female filmmaker known for her directorial debut hit, The Virgin Suicides. Coppola was born in New York to well-known filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola. Sofia Coppola acted in a few of her dad’s movies before breaking into filmmaking herself. Coppola also garnered critical success with her comedy, Lost in Translation, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and nomination for Best Director, the third woman ever to be nominated for that award. Continuing to shatter the glass ceiling, Coppola was the first American woman to win the Golden Lion for her drama, Somewhere, at the Venice Film Festival.
