Description
Description

Tasman Flax Lily (Dianella tasmanica) is a strappy, grass-like perennial known for its broad, arching green leaves that create a lush, fountain-like form. The foliage provides a bold texture, and in spring to early summer, it is accented by delicate clusters of blue to violet star-shaped flowers, which are sometimes followed by striking, bright blue berries. Also called flax lily or blue flax lily, it is native to southeastern Australia, particularly Tasmania and surrounding coastal and forested regions.

Tasman Flax Lily naturally grows in shaded woodlands, along forest margins, and in moist, sheltered areas. It is valued for its ornamental appeal, toughness, and adaptability to varied environments. Beyond its visual beauty, the plant is notable for its resilience to shade and its traditional uses by Indigenous Australians, who utilized parts of the plant for weaving and food. It is commonly used in landscape designs for groundcover, edging, and mass plantings.
