Description
Description

Water Hyacinth, or Eichhornia crassipes, is a free-floating aquatic plant known for its bulbous, spongy leaf stalks that act as natural flotation devices. Its rounded leaves cluster into compact rosettes, and its lavender-purple flowers create one of the most recognizable displays in freshwater environments. Native to the Amazon basin, Eichhornia crassipes now inhabits lakes, canals, reservoirs, and wetlands worldwide.

It spreads rapidly through both fragmentation and stolons, forming expansive mats that block sunlight, reduce oxygen, and impede water movement. The species’ ability to double its biomass quickly makes Eichhornia crassipes one of the most notorious invasive plants globally. Despite its beauty, it reshapes ecosystems, affects fisheries, and interferes with human activity. Its buoyant structure and rapid growth rate make Eichhornia crassipes a dominant presence wherever it becomes established.
