Description

Balloon Flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) is a perennial flowering plant admired for its unique bud and bloom transformation. Before opening, the flower buds swell into round, balloon-like shapes, which then unfurl into star-shaped blossoms with five distinct petals. The blooms are typically deep blue to violet, though white and pink varieties also exist, each with fine veining that adds depth to the color. Its foliage consists of lance-shaped green leaves arranged along upright stems, creating a neat, vertical form.

Native to East Asia, including China, Korea, Japan, and parts of Siberia, it grows naturally in meadows, forest edges, and grassy slopes. Also called Chinese bellflower, it holds cultural significance in Asian art, gardens, and traditional medicine. Flowering in summer, it attracts pollinators while offering long-lasting color. Known for its charming bud stage and striking open blooms, Balloon Flower is valued for both ornamental appeal and its symbolic associations with honesty and steadfastness.
