Description
Description

Blackberry Lily (Iris domestica) is a perennial flowering plant known for its vibrant summer blooms and distinctive seed pods. Despite its name, it is not a true lily but a member of the iris family. Its flowers, borne on slender, branching stems, display six petals in vivid orange to reddish-orange, often speckled with darker spots, giving them a leopard-like pattern. Long, sword-shaped green leaves fan out at the base, adding vertical structure to the plant.

Native to East Asia, including China, Japan, and Russia, it grows naturally in open meadows, grassy slopes, and forest edges. The common name comes from its unusual fruit—shiny black seeds clustered like blackberries, which persist after the flowers fade. Also called leopard lily, it is valued for both its ornamental blooms and its decorative seed heads, which are often used in dried arrangements. With its dual-season appeal, Blackberry Lily offers color, texture, and interest well beyond flowering.
