Description

The Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) is an evergreen species of flowering palm that is part of the Arecaceae family. The Canary Island Date Palm is naturally found within the Canary Islands and is a relative of the True Date Palm. The Canary Island Date Palm has pinnate leaves with 80 to 100 leaflets that form a striking rounded crown. The fruits of the Canary Island Date Palm are oval, yellow to orange drupes that contain a single seed. The fruits are edible, but are not very tasty. The Canary Island Date Palm is not in danger of extinction.

Some people call it the pineapple palm. The palm favors wet-winters, wet-summers, Mediterranean climate, or humid subtropical climate, with low altitude conditions. The palm has a slow growth rate and requires frequent pruning to enhance its appearance. It grows on fertile, medium moisture, well-drained loam soil, with little shade. The trunk may be stout and gray-brown but massive with a rich green rounded crown.
