Description
Description

Cinnamon Fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum) is a striking, deciduous fern recognized for its bright green, feather-like fronds that rise in an elegant, vase-like shape from a single central crown. In its solitary form, the plant stands alone as a sculptural specimen, showcasing its distinct fertile fronds—erect, cinnamon-brown spires that emerge early in the growing season and give the fern its common name. Also known as Buckhorn Fern, it is native to the wetlands and moist forests of eastern North America, where it grows in shaded, saturated soils along streams and swamps.

As a single plant, it offers strong botanical presence and seasonal interest, especially when the contrasting fertile and sterile fronds are both visible. Cinnamon Fern has ancient lineage and ecological importance, providing habitat and cover in damp woodland ecosystems. Its striking contrast of textures and colors makes it a favorite for naturalistic plantings and woodland gardens.
