Description
Description

Common Plantain (Plantago major) is a hardy perennial weed recognized for its rosette of broad, oval leaves with distinct parallel veins and smooth or slightly wavy edges. From the center of the rosette, tall, leafless stalks rise, tipped with narrow spikes of tiny, greenish-brown flowers. Sometimes called broadleaf plantain or greater plantain, it is native to Europe and Asia but has spread worldwide, thriving in compacted soils, lawns, roadsides, and disturbed ground.

Known as a colonizing weed, it quickly establishes itself in areas of human activity, taking advantage of poor or trampled soils. Despite its classification as a weed, it has long been valued in traditional medicine, with leaves historically used to soothe wounds, insect bites, and inflammation. Its seeds also provide food for birds and small wildlife. With its resilience, adaptability, and ecological presence, Common Plantain demonstrates how a persistent wild plant can be both a nuisance and a useful resource.

Colonizing and shrubby weeds are fast-spreading, woody or semi-woody plants that establish themselves quickly in open, disturbed, or neglected landscapes. These species often appear in abandoned lots, roadsides, forest edges, grasslands, and post-fire or cleared areas.
