Description
Description

Dusky Cranesbill (Single) (Geranium phaeum) is a hardy perennial recognized for its refined form and darkly toned blooms. Its nodding, five-petaled flowers range from deep maroon to purplish-black, sometimes subtly edged in a lighter hue, giving them a mysterious elegance. The blossoms are held above mounds of deeply lobed green leaves, which may occasionally display darker central markings.

Native to Europe and western Asia, it naturally inhabits woodland edges, meadows, and upland slopes, thriving in both sun and partial shade. Also called mourning widow, the name reflects its rich, somber flower colors. Blooming from late spring into summer, it provides nectar for bees and other pollinators while blending effortlessly into both wild and cultivated settings. In its single form, the plant represents the unaltered species, valued for its reliability, long-lived nature, and ability to add depth, texture, and quiet sophistication to perennial borders and naturalized planting schemes.
