She began writing plays and screenplays as a college student, and went on to co-write and star in several films, including Frances Ha (2012) and Mistress America (2015). In 2017, Gerwig made her solo directorial debut with the semi-autobiographical film Lady Bird, starring Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet. In 2019, she wrote the screenplay for and directed a new adaptation of Louise M. Alcott’s much-loved novel, Little Women. The film received much critical acclaim and was nominated for several Academy Awards. She lives in Brooklyn with her filmmaking partner, Noah Baumbach.
