Hawthorn Tree

Pair of elevation drawings of a Hawthorn Tree illustrated in silhouette and detail

The Hawthorn Tree, Crataegus monogyna, is a small deciduous tree with a dense canopy. Also known as the Common Hawthorn or Oneseed Hawthorn the tree has dull brown bark with orange-colored cracks. The Hawthorn Tree is native to Europe, Northwest Africa, and West Asia preferring hedgerows, fields, and woodland habitats.

The average lifespan of the Hawthorn Tree is about 250 years, but this tree has been known to live longer. The Hawthorn Tree has been traditionally used for herbalism and provides over 300 insects like the Hawthorn Moth or Orchard Ermine with food and birds with habitat and shelter.

Deciduous Trees are a type of tree that seasonally sheds their leaves for part of the year—typically in the autumn. As a natural occurring process for conserving water during winter or drought seasons, deciduous trees will often display bright autumn colors as they prepare for shedding their leaves.
