Description
Description

Japanese Water Iris (Group) (Iris ensata) refers to cultivated selections of this elegant perennial, chosen for their large, flat blooms and rich color variations. These grouped varieties share the species’ signature broad, overlapping petals in shades of purple, violet, blue, pink, or white, often accented with contrasting signals or veining. The flowers rise on tall, slender stems above clumps of long, sword-like green leaves, creating a striking vertical presence.

Native to Japan, China, Korea, and eastern Russia, Iris ensata thrives in wet meadows, marshes, and pond edges, where its roots enjoy consistently moist soil. Group cultivars may differ in bloom size, petal patterning, or color depth, but all maintain the species’ refined form and summer flowering period. Valued for their ornamental beauty and cultural significance in Japanese gardens, Japanese Water Iris group varieties also attract pollinators and bring bold, painterly color to waterside plantings, formal borders, and naturalistic landscape designs.
