Bred originally in the Himalayan Mountains to stand guard outside Buddhist temples, the Lhasa Apso gives meaning to being ”small, but mighty.” While a staple of Tibetan history with an association with the Dalai Lama, the Lhasa Apso was not commonly bred in America until the 1940s when the fourteenth Dalai Lama gave the pups as gifts. It is believed in Tibetan lore that the country is protected by a mystical Snow Lion and that Lhasa Apsos are the Snow Lion’s earth-bound agents.
