Its name in Norwegian translates to ”puffin dog”, as the breed was originally developed to hunt puffins and their eggs on cliffs and caves. It has six toes that are useful in hunting birds in inaccessible locations. Other distinguishing characteristics are its flexibility that allows it to fit itself into narrow passages, and the dense outercoat and soft undercoat.
