The Pyrenean Shepherd is a medium-sized herding dog that originated in the Pyrenees Mountains in southern France and northern Spain. It was an active sheep herder and flock guardian. The breed comes in two varieties- rough-faced (Poll Long) and smooth-Faced (Face Rase). The variations differ slightly in size. However, both have small head proportions in comparison with the body. The body is long and lean, and it supports the flat skull, triangular muzzle, and expressive and intelligent face. Designed to be a sheepdog, the breed is known to have the energy of other herding dogs. They are clever and protective of children.
