Description
Description

Reineckea (Reineckea carnea) is a perennial herbaceous plant appreciated as a spreading groundcover, particularly in shaded gardens where few others thrive. It forms dense mats of arching, strap-like leaves, typically dark green and glossy, which create a soft, grass-like carpet. In late summer to autumn, it produces small spikes of fragrant, star-shaped flowers in pale pink to rose tones, followed by decorative red berries that extend its seasonal appeal.

Native to East Asia, especially China and Japan, it naturally inhabits woodland floors and moist, sheltered slopes. Sometimes called Japanese reineckea or pink reineckea, it is valued for its durability, evergreen foliage, and slow but steady spread. Beyond its ornamental use, it has been noted in traditional Chinese gardens for its refined beauty and low-maintenance character. Combining year-round greenery with delicate flowers and colorful fruit, Reineckea enriches shaded borders, pathways, and underplantings with elegance, resilience, and quiet charm.
