Originally bred for the purpose of mountain rescues and farming, Saint Bernards are one of the four Sennenhund (alpine pasture dog) breeds. Saint Bernards are known for being ‘gentle giants’ with calm, patient, and nurturing temperaments for children and companions—though they should be socialized early to prevent any fearful territorial tendencies. The Saint Bernard has a smooth or rough coat that is commonly shaded red or mahogany on white with black shades on the face and ears.
