Description
Description

Siebold’s Plantain Lily (Large) (Hosta sieboldiana) is a herbaceous perennial admired for its imposing size and bold, mounded form, making it a striking element in shaded plantings. It forms expansive clumps of broad, heart-shaped leaves that are deeply veined and often glaucous blue-green in color, lending a cool, architectural presence to the garden. In early to midsummer, tall scapes emerge bearing clusters of funnel-shaped, pale lavender to white flowers that hover above the foliage, adding seasonal elegance.

Native to Japan, Hosta sieboldiana is well adapted to woodland environments, where it grows in moist, sheltered sites. This large form is prized for its dramatic foliage, which provides texture and contrast when paired with finer-leaved or flowering perennials. Sometimes referred to simply as giant hosta, it has become a classic choice for creating lush, layered landscapes. Its combination of massive leaves, tidy mounding habit, and refined blooms gives it both structural and ornamental importance.
