Yao Ming was born in Shanghai, in 1980. He began playing basketball as a child, and joined the junior team of the Shanghai Sharks aged 13. The Houston Rockets signed Yao Ming - Yao became the first international player to be selected first pick of the draft. He played for the Rockets for eight seasons, before being forced to retire due to injuries. Due to his success in the United States, Yao Ming has become one of the most popular athletes worldwide, especially in his home country of China. In 2009, he purchased his former team, the Shanghai Sharks. He completed a degree in economics in 2018.
