Description
Description

American yellowwood (Cladrastis kentukea) in a large form is a refined deciduous flowering tree distinguished by its smooth pale bark, broad layered canopy, and hanging clusters of fragrant white blossoms. Thick horizontal branches extend outward from the trunk in elegant sweeping forms, creating a soft rounded crown with substantial seasonal foliage. The leaves are pinnately compound and composed of multiple oval leaflets that create a fine but lush canopy texture.

Native to the southeastern United States, Cladrastis kentukea naturally inhabits limestone slopes and deciduous woodland environments. The species is biologically notable for its relatively rare flowering cycles, with mature trees occasionally producing especially dramatic bloom years. In large form, the tree emphasizes expansive branch architecture, layered canopy depth, and cascading floral clusters, expressing one of the most graceful flowering silhouettes among eastern North American deciduous trees.
