The Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), also known as the Pencil Pine, is a medium-sized evergreen coniferous tree that grows into a columnar form. The Italian Cypress is native to the eastern Mediterranean region specifically in northeast Libya, southern Albania, and the southern coast of Croatia. The Italian Cypress is distinguished by its erect branches that grow branchlets that loosely hang from them. Its foliage is made up of dense sprays that are dark green in color and resemble rounded scales. The Italian Cypress is non-flowering and produces cones. The Italian Cypress is not in danger of extinction.
Italian Cypresses have a typical overall height between 40’-70’ (12.2-21.3 m) and spread diameter of 5’-10’ (1.5-3 m). Exceptional mature Italian Cypress trees may grow to heights of 115’ (35 m) in the wild. The trunk of the Italian Cypress has a diameter of 1.6’-3.3’ (.5-1 m) with scale-like leaf lengths between .08”-.2” (2-5 mm).
