The Peppered Moth (Biston betularia) is a night-flying moth species that is widely distributed throughout Asia, Europe, and North America. Their name references their white wings that are ”peppered” with black. The black speckling varies in amount, as in some examples it is almost absent, and in others it is so dense that the wings appear to be black sprinkled with white. The forewings are narrowly elongated, and the adult males’ antennae are strongly bipectinate. The Peppered Moth is cryptically camouflaged against their backgrounds when they rest in the boughs of trees.
