Serena Williams, born September 26, 1981, is an American tennis player. She reached the No. 1 ranking on July 8, 2002, and on her sixth occasion, she held the ranking for 186 consecutive weeks; in total, she has been No. 1 for 319 weeks. Williams has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles (as of 2020), the most by any player in the Open Era. She holds the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles combined among active players. In 2016 Serena Williams was the highest paid female athlete, and again in 2017, when she was the only woman on Forbes’ list of the 100 highest paid athletes.

Tennis is a competitive sport where single players (singles) or pairs of players (doubles) use rackets to hit a felt covered rubber ball over a central net onto the opponent’s court. Points are scored by hitting the tennis ball over the net in a way that the opponent is not able to return it.
