Southern catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides) is a broad deciduous flowering tree distinguished by its oversized heart-shaped leaves, twisting branches, and large clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers. The canopy develops through thick irregular limbs that support expansive foliage masses with a coarse tropical-like texture. White flowers marked with yellow and purple spotting emerge in upright clusters before giving way to long bean-like seed pods that persist seasonally.

Native to the southeastern United States, Catalpa bignonioides naturally grows in river valleys and moist lowland forests. The species is biologically notable for rapid growth and highly distinctive elongated seed capsules.
