Dimensioned plan drawing of a UFC Octagon measured with length and width

The UFC Octagon is a competition area used in the mixed martial arts (MMA) organization known as the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Athletes compete within the octagon through striking and grappling one another either while standing or on the ground. The athletes use skills or techniques used in various combat sports and martial arts.

An Octagon can be built indoors or outdoors with two gates behind which each athlete and his team stand. The chain link walls consist of fencing material with padding covers on all corners and edges for the safety of the athletes. The design of the UFC Octagon also ensures no athlete has an advantage “cutting off the ring” like in other MMA sports such as boxing.

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, is a full-contact combat sport that includes both standing and on-ground striking and grappling. In a traditional MMA fight, there are five rounds that each last five minutes with one-minute rest periods in-between rounds. Fighters win by knock-out, tap-out, or points.
