Venus Williams, born June 17, 1980, is an American professional tennis player. She has been ranked world No. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) on three occasions for a total of 11 weeks. Williams first reached the No. 1 ranking on February 25, 2002, and she was the first African American woman to do so in the Open Era. Venus Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, and she, along with her younger sister Serena Williams, is credited with ushering in a new era of power and athleticism on the women’s professional tennis tour.

Tennis is a competitive sport where single players (singles) or pairs of players (doubles) use rackets to hit a felt covered rubber ball over a central net onto the opponent’s court. Points are scored by hitting the tennis ball over the net in a way that the opponent is not able to return it.
