Domestic Dogs | Dog Breeds

Domestic Dogs | Dog Breeds

Description
Description

Dogs are domesticated mammals of the Carnivora order. Descendants of wolves, dogs are the first animals to have been domesticated by humans—roughly 30,000 years ago. Dogs are bred for particular physical and emotional characteristics to assist humans with work and service tasks or to serve as companions, or pets. Dogs are differentiated as either purebred, or pedigree, with parents of the same breed, or as mixed-breeds, mutts, hybrids or mongrels with parents of multiple breeds. Dogs are often referred to as ‘man’s best friend’ referring to the high degree of loyalty that dogs share with humans.

Anatomy
Anatomy

Domestic dogs, beloved companions to many, exhibit a wide range of sizes and shapes, but share common anatomical traits. Their bodies, whether lithe or robust, are built for movement, with muscular legs for running and a flexible spine. Their paws have pads and nails suitable for various terrains. Dogs communicate through barks, whines, and growls, and also convey emotions through body language, especially their tail. Their keen sense of smell is legendary, outperforming our own by magnitudes, and they possess sharp hearing. While their vision is different from ours, with a broader field of view and enhanced night sight, it's adapted perfectly for their needs.

Human Interaction
Human Interaction

Dogs and humans share a bond tracing back thousands of years, evolving from wolves into our hunting partners and protectors. This age-old alliance has transformed dogs into "man's best friend." Their impact on culture is vast: from ancient legends to modern films like "Lassie" and "Old Yeller," they're celebrated symbols of loyalty and love. Literature, music, and art frequently feature canines, underscoring our shared history.

While most breeds aren't endangered, some face health issues due to overbreeding. Various organizations and individuals champion canine welfare, combating puppy mills, promoting adoption, and ensuring our four-legged companions receive the love and care they've historically given us.

Sealyham Terrier
Comparison diagram of the Sealyham Terrier dog breed in relation to the height of a typical person

The Sealyham Terrier is a working dog that is a part of the terrier family originating from Wales. They were initially used for pest control, hunting small game, and eliminating vermin, particularly badgers. Physically, the Sealyham Terrier is low to the ground, and it has a white double coat; the outer coat is wiry and weather resistant, and the undercoat is dense. The breed is versatile, as they adapt well in either city or country environments, and although they enjoy the company of others, they are independent and can be happy alone.

Sealyham Terriers have a withers height between 8”-11” (20-28 cm) and a typical weight in the range of 18-24 lb (8-11 kg). The Sealyham Terrier has an overall body length of roughly 16”-20” (41-56 cm), standing height between 14”-18” (36-46 cm), and a typical lifespan of 11-14 years.

Rottweiler
Side profile silhouette drawing of a Rottweiler describing a standard Rottweiler's height and length compared to a person

Considered to be one of the oldest dog breeds, the German Rottweiler was traditionally kept as a herding dog for driving cattle and protecting humans. Medium to large in build with compact and powerful bodies, Rottweilers are good natured, devoted, obedient and committed to work. Because of their alert dispositions and their physical proportions allowing for great strength, agility and endurance, Rottweilers are now commonly used for search, guard, and police dogs.

The average Rottweiler has an overall height of 30.5"-34" (77-86 cm), withers height of 23.5"-26" (60-66 cm), and body length of 38.5"-42" (98-107 cm). A typical Rottweiler weighs between 90-120 lb (42-55 kg) and has a lifespan of roughly 8-10 years.

Norfolk Terrier
Size comparison illustration of the Norfolk Terrier dog breed compared to an average person

Active, compact, portable, and adaptable! These and other toyish qualities make the Norfolk Terrier an excellent traveler. The dog is separated from the Norwich terrier using its ears, which in the former is folded over. Family, not just with humans but also with other dogs, is important for the Norfolk terrier. The dog rarely barks and was originally bred to get rid of vermin. The Norfolk terrier has short legs, wire-haired weather-resistant coats in tan, black, and wheaten colors. A balanced angulation of its body combined with its active and compact size, good ribs, and bones make it a more agile earth-dog and trailblazer.

Norfolk Terriers have a withers height between 9”-10” (23-25 cm) and a typical weight in the range of 11-13 lb (5-6 kg). The Norfolk Terrier has an overall body length of roughly 15”-17” (38-43 cm), standing height between 12”-13” (30-33 cm), and a typical lifespan of 12-16 years.
