The Greater Flamingo (phoenicopterus roseus) is a flamingo species that is the most widespread. They live in mudflats and shallow coastal lagoons with salt water in Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, and in southern Europe. Physically, the plumage is pink-white with red wing coverts and black primary and secondary flight feathers. The legs are pink, and the bill is also pink with a restricted black tip. As chicks they are covered in gray fluffy down. Their diet consists of small shrimp, seeds, blue-green algae, microscopic organisms, and mollusks; this is obtained by stirring up the mud and sucking water through the bill to filter out the food.
