The Red-Shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) lives in eastern North America, along the coast of California, and northern to northeastern-central Mexico. The name is in reference to their red ”shoulders” which are visible when the birds are perched. Other characteristics are their brown heads, red chests, and pale bellies. They have long yellow legs, heavily barred wings, and long tails marked with narrow white bars. With sharp vision, good hearing, and powerful talons, the Red-Shouldered Hawk will search for its prey while a treetop or when soaring over woodlands. They mostly eat small mammals like rodents.
