It may have both shark and ray features because of a body that resembles a shark but with pectoral fin wing-like, however, the shovelnose guitarfish (Rhinobatos productus) name comes from the guitar-shaped body plus long sharp snout and not the shark and ray characteristics. It is a member of the family Rhinobatidae, native to the Gulf of California, and prefers the soft muddy bottoms of the seafloor. Besides, the fish loves to remain stationary on the sandy bed, aided by its compressed belly and back. These nocturnal ambush predators have a unique breathing system of siphoning water via spiracles on their heads and depressing the water out through gills on their underside.
