Sports Equipment

Sports equipment refers to the various gear and tools which are required for individuals or sporting teams to use when participating in a game. Sports equipment varies significantly between game types and can include balls, rackets, vehicles, footwear, and training attire that athletes and players use to make competitions more enjoyable and safe. Technology has also revolutionized sports equipment to include protective gear that can prevent injuries in a games—with some games prohibiting players from participating without the required equipment. Augmenting the required gear, wearables have also grown in usage in sports with athletes being able to measure and deliver performance data that can be monitored and improved upon to achieve peak athletic performance.

Table Tennis Tables
Plan drawing of a standard regulation Table Tennis | Ping Pong Table with dimensions for width and length

Table tennis tables are regulated playing surfaces designed specifically for the game of table tennis (ping-pong). Table tennis tables measure 9’ | 2.74 m long by 5’ | 1.525 m in wide. The playing surface of a ping-pong table must be set at a height of 2.5’ | 76 cm and is equipped with a center net that is 6” | 15.25 cm high and stretches 6” | 15.25 cm beyond the width of the table.

Tables can be constructed out of a variety of materials ranging from common designs using plywood and/or particle-board to more exotic variants made of concrete, metal, plastic or fiber-glass. The materiality of a table tennis table is a matter of preference, but the bounce of the ball on the surface should be uniform at a height of 9.1” | 23 cm when dropped at a height of 11.8” | 30 cm.

Badminton Shuttlecock
Size comparison diagram relating the size of a Badminton Shuttlecock to a Squash Ball and Tennis Ball

A Badminton Shuttlecock, also called a bird or a birdie, is a high-drag projectile used in the sport of Badminton. The open conical shape is formed by feathers, or a synthetic alternative, and embedded into a rounded cork or rubber base. Synthetic Shuttlecocks are referred to as plastics, and feathered Shuttlecocks are called feathers. There are 16 or so overlapping feathers, and it is preferable to use feathers from right or left wings, and to not mix feathers from different wings. This shape makes the Shuttlecock aerodynamically stable, and regardless of the initial orientation, the Shuttlecock will turn to fly cork first.

Badminton Shuttlecocks have a head diameter of .98”-1.1” (25-28 mm) and increase to an overall feather diameter between 2.28”-2.68” (58-68 mm). The overall length of a shuttlecock varies from 3.35”-3.75” (85-95 mm) and is dependent on the lengths of the feathers and the height of the head. The mass of a Badminton Shuttlecock is between .167-.194 oz (4.75-5.5 g).

Duckpin Pin Deck
Size comparison diagram of the Duckpin Pin Deck compared to other bowling decks

Duckpin Pin Decks in Duckpin Bowling is the spacing between each of the Duckpins that creates an equilateral triangle formation. Duck Pin Spacing is the same as the more known Ten-Pin Bowling. Duckpin Pin Spacing is determined by the placement of the 4 rows of Duckpins in the triangle layout. Each side of the triangle has 4 Duckpins. The back row has 4 Duckpins, followed by 3 Duckpins, then 2 Duckpins, and the last row with the head pin. The head Duckpin marks the center of the width of the bowling lane. Any fallen Duckpin is removed once it is struck by the ball.

Duckpin Pin Decks have an overall width of 40.125” (101.9 cm) and depth of 35.25” (89.5 cm). The spacing between adjacent pins is 12" (30.48 cm).

Beer Pong Table - Large

Large Beer Pong Tables are wider than average tables used for playing beer pong. Typically designed and used in settings that don’t require the tables to be easily transportable, large beer pong tables are often found in personal homes, college fraternities and sororities, and bars. Because of the personal nature of these larger beer pong tables they are painted and customized by their owners.

Like official beer pong tables, large beer pong tables are 8’ (2.44 m) long and 27.5” (70 cm) tall with variable widths between 4’-5’ (1.2-1.5 m). The standard distance between the front two cups in a 10 cup game is roughly 65” (165 cm).

Ten-Pin Bowling Pin
Scaled comparison drawings of the Ten-Pin Bowling Pin and other bowling pins

The Ten-Pin Bowling Pin is the type of pin used in Ten-Pin Bowling and serves as the target of the bowling ball in a game. A standard Ten-Pin Bowling Pin is wider at its base and narrows towards the top. Every Ten-Pin Bowling Pin is allowed 2 voids at its widest area to balance the narrow top of the pin. The inner void affects the center of gravity and tipping point of the pin. A Ten-Pin Bowling Pin can be made of wood or plastic materials. The standards of the Ten-Pin Bowling Pin are set by the United States Bowling Congress.

Ten-Pin Bowling Pins have an overall diameter of 4.75” (121 mm), base diameter of 2.03” (51.6 mm), and overall height of 15” (38 cm). The mass of a Ten-Pin Bowling Pin is regulated at between 3.3-3.5 lb (1.5-1.6 kg).
