Ball pythons (Python regius) are the smallest African python, and would gradually curl into a ball when frightened or stressed, hence the name ball python. They are members of the family Pythonidae and common to West and Central Africa showing a stocky built, small head, slender neck, smooth scales, lighter underside but dark with light brown blotches on the back and side. This terrestrial snake prefers grassland and shrublands, cares for eggs but not young ones, and is hunted for its meat or as a pet. The ball python has also featured in the Igbo's culture of the people of Nigeria who see it as a symbol of the earth and other folklore in Ghana.
