Description

The California Quail (Callipepla californica) also referred to as the California Valley Quail, is a small bird with broad wings. It has a curving crest made up of 6 feathers that droop forward. A male has black plumage while a female has brown feathers. The California Quail lives in sagebrush, oak woodlands, and the foothill forests of California. It is sometimes seen in city or suburban parks as well as agricultural areas. The California Quail spends most of its time on the ground searching for food. It feeds off insects and plants since it requires a high protein diet.
